Property Tax Increase is Reduced, and Residents Given More Time to Pay for 2020

Burnaby City Council has revised the property tax increase for 2020, reducing the rate from a proposed 3.5% to 1.75% to provide a measure of relief for residents and businesses.

Property owners will also have the option to pay their taxes later in the year. While the payment deadline remains July 3, 2020, property owners will have until September 30, 2020 to pay without penalty. After September 30, a 10% penalty will apply to outstanding balances. Those who are able to pay by July 3 are encouraged to do so.

To save time and practice physical distancing, property owners can pay online through the City of Burnaby’s My Property Portal. The portal allows you to:

  • Claim your Home Owner Grant
  • View your balance
  • Pay online by credit card (a non-refundable 1.75% convenience fee will apply)

City Council is aware of the financial stress the pandemic has placed on Burnaby residents and businesses, and has taken measures to lower the property tax increase for 2020. The reduced property tax rate increase will be achieved through a delay in hiring and deferral of projects due to the current circumstances, without affecting services to residents.

Property tax notices will be mailed out at the end of May and should arrive by the first week of June.
